Behind the Project
The inspiration.

It happened on the water.

As I shared in the film, I had a whole moment in my car one night and God sent me on a journey to the future. Shortly after that moment, I was led to travel to Mexico, on a solo trip, just to reflect and to hear. I wrote down every detail in my notebook and that began the process of what Inside Out was and would be. I had vision, but little details, and even less resources. So at that moment on the beach, I had to decide to either shrink into my fears, memories of what didn't work in the past, and anxiety about whether or not I could pull this off. OR...I could activate my faith and do something I've never done before. I chose the latter.

I returned home on April 27, 2019 assembled the team as I knew it. Shoot day was June 15. I had 2 months to plan, prep, and execute. Yikes.

Behind the scenes.

Band rehearsals, Venue scouting, Set design planning, Production planning, OH My!
The funny thing about this whole process is that I had no idea what each next step would look like. God is strategic in that way, if I thought I knew it all, I wouldn't push beyond my own abilities. I would scout out a venue, consider it and God was like "nope, not this one...but ask the front desk what else they have"
I was led to a completely bare room. Nothing in it, but potential. And so the planning beginning.

I knew that I was going to be doing an interview and a song, but that's all I knew initially. What song, what musicians, all that stuff, no clue. But again, God knew. Down to who to contact specifically, he had me reaching out to folks that I had never worked with and some I hadn't worked with in years. And it was all purposeful, even those that declined or were unavailable along the way. I realized that the big picture and lesson was in simply following the instructions. From there all these wonderful things opened up.

Shout out to my musicians: Drew who I worked with wayyyy back when I first began singing, he's a super star keyboardist and always busy, but when I reached out he was so here for it and held me down every step of the way.  Justin (my drummer) who was just too cool through this whole thing LOL through him I realized that everything was gonna come together and I needed to not panic (a past habit that had to break) And then came Adrian (bass) in the absolute clutch. I don't have rehearsal  of him pics because he got brought on just days before the shoot when some unforeseen circumstances occurred (all purposeful tho) They were here for the vision and believed in what I was doing and I couldn't have asked for a better squad.

Yall, I thought this project was going to be all black and white and silver. ("I" thought.) but as the planning continued it got more and more clear and vivid and in the spirit of breaking out, color was the answer...ALL the colors lol. Even down to my wardrobe, my girl Dominique and I went shopping just looking for stuff (God bless her for journeying with me in a thrift store...intense lol), didnt really find anything. And then I remembered the colors, I just grabbed as much colorful stuff as the thrift store could offer, went home, laid it out, and pulled it together and there it was. Meanwhile, Dom designed a bomb style guide for the band and got them together. I didn't know how it was gonna be done, but step by step I opened my heart to hear and the vision continued to grow. Went to my mom's house and swiped all her fabric (she's a designer) and showed up at the venue with some safety pins and clips LOL

Shoot Day

Set up, Run thru, And Record. Ready or not...all or nothing.

We only had 4 hours to get it right. Including set up, styling, and all of that! I came in the morning of after we had been there the night before setting up as much as we could (shout out to theeee dream team for helping out!) I could barely sleep the night before because as much as we had done...it wasn't "it". So I found myself up in the middle of the night drawing out ideas for the set design and ...nothing. Upon walking in the room that next morning with very little time to spare, we had to start all over. I grabbed a ladder and started taking stuff down and putting stuff up, literal sweat and tears. But we got it, I stepped back and had a sigh of relief knowing, the vision was completed! Then off to makeup, now just about to run behind in our schedule, Crystal & Ashley got my face all the way together while the band sound checked without me. This means that once I was dressed, that was it, time to GO! We had to go on the strength of the ONE (uno) rehearsals that we had a few days before & just being introduced to our bass player the day of...(I mean it was a day of miraculous works and me saying many times, "how sway?" lol.

Unlike a traditional song recording, we couldn't stop, pick up where we left off, fix mistakes, etc. We had one single take to get it right , or wrong lol. We ran thru the song a few times, but as a unit, me and the band didn't feel like we had "nailed it". The clock was ticking, I took a deep breath and recalled all that I had made it thru thus far in this process and realized there was a certain intent that had to be achieved.

Something special had to happen in that room. So with no air conditioning (we were so hot in there) and limited time. The word "Free" rung loud in my ear and I encouraged myself and my team..."Yall, this is going to be the one. And this time be as free as you possibly can...get lose, break out" and the rest was history...

The power of the "Team"

And this is Inside Out!

About 10 years ago, I tried to release this song and an entire project called "Inside Out" and no matter what I did at that time, I couldn't get it out. It was a hard pill to swallow, but fast forward to today and I stand back and reflect on the power of timing and purpose. I'm so excited about what Inside Out is today and in honor of what it took to get to this place, I used the original album art from that project as well.

Thank you so much again for being a part of this special release. It's my hope that you take whatever you experienced in viewing this project and feel absolutely free to embrace ALL that is inside of you and to Go be Great!
Once the film drops, PLEASE like, comment, and share! Especially with a creative person to inspire them to keep going! Love yall, until next time!!!
